So your office / home has WiFi but no Ethernet. You just acquired a machine that does not have a WiFi card. Bummer! What can you do?
Do you have a spare AirPort Express ? Did you know you can use it as an Ethernet to WiFi bridge?!
We discovered this feature some time ago and were pleased to learn this trick is documented.
Apple does mention this ability in support docs : Depending on how you have it set up, the Ethernet port can function as a LAN port (defined as either simple bridging or sharing your Internet connection via network address translation) or a WAN port (connecting to your broadband Internet service provider or upstream router).
Amazing !

Interesting, you don’t even need a wireless card to get wireless internet. This is almost as innovative as wireless technology itself. As a side note, if you live around Portland, Oregon and don’t have a wireless internet provider head over to Clear and check out their service.

Thanks Dan, this was such a fluke. We sent someone over to the local Apple shop – sort of last minute – and added a PowerBook to our office, only to realize it had no WiFi card!
Someone at the office asked if we could use the Ethernet port of one of the satellite AirPort Express to connect the PowerBook. While we were laughing at the idea, he went ahead and plugged it in and before you know it, the sight of Google on his screen sure made us look stupid.

Why isn’t Apple marketing Airpo Express more? Print server, iTunes streaming client, wifi/ethernet bridge in the size of a wall plug. <3

It seems that 10.5.8 has buggered my Airpo connection. Having to connect a wireless bridge until Apple fix it!

I’m using an Apple 802.11n Airpo Express to extend my network and act as a wired bridge.

I found the apple airpo extremeN router to be solid. Put two in a bridge. Then aps on your end.

I recently created a tutorial on configuring an Airport Extreme to act as an Ethernet bridge; you may find it helpful if you are not sure how to make this work. You can find the post here: http://www.tireddonkey.com/files/EthernetBridge.html
