Two of us here at WebsiteForensics spent 32 days on a road-trip down to the East Coast of Canada. It was bliss: the people, the places, the food. This is Canada’s best kept secret.

Unfortunately, on our way through Montreal, we thought it would be a great idea to stop by the Atwater Marché for some produce. That’s when it happened: a smash and grab. In just a few minutes, our laptop, cameras, backpacks were stolen. All our pictures had been downloaded to the computer, so there we were with bags of apples and carrots but no pictures from our trip save the 200 or so still on the camera they didn’t manage to steal. What a nightmare.

Back at the office, Blake asked us for our SD Flash cards. We weren’t quite sure what for since we told him we had wiped off hundreds of images when we downloaded them to the stolen machine. He walked away and started working furiously on his machine. We had no idea what he was doing when he called us over.

On his screen were hundreds of images we thought we had lost forever. You see, Flash drives are like hard drives, the data is never really erased unless you do a full rewrite of every byte. Luckily, if you have not over-written to much of the data, you can recover deleted images on a flash drive with the right software.

Thanks to FileSalvage 7 from SubRosaSoft.com, Blake was able to recover hundreds of our lost images! Well worth the cost of the software, memories are priceless.

We’re still reading the classifieds over at Montreal.Craigslist every day…

Often times, when copying text from an editor like Word or a Webpage, to Dreamweaver, you also copy a lot of formatting. This can often times be a nuisance, so it becomes necessary to “unformat” the text.

If it’s only a few words, a sentence, copy the content and paste to the URL bar to unformat, select anew and paste to Dreamweaver.

If you’re dealing with a lot more content, paste the text to your favorite email client and changer the format of the message to “text” or un-select “HTML”. Select anew, the content has now lost all formatting.

The field of remote access software has provided clients with a large number of packages, but few offer high-level encryption: 256-bit encryption – the highest in its class. Proxy Network’s Proxy Pro 6 offers peer-to-peer remote access, remote management tools that come in several flavors, from Workstation Edition to the Gateway Edition.

Workstation Edition – Proxy Pro 6 software can reach unattended remote PC’s, can generate hardware inventory remotely, change settings without interfering with remote users and can find all remote in the network.

Gateway Edition – This edition offers the ability to organize large numbers of machines into groups, strong authentication using SSL, multiple collaborative connections and mass deployment.

Screen Recording Edition – This version offers screen captures of a large number of remote machines, unannounced recording, web-based playback and very small recorded files.

A free 30-day trial of PROXY Pro 6 remote desktop software can be downloaded once some basic information is entered into a form.

A full comparison sheet is available for RDP and VNC users who want to compare remote access options, remote control and remote management features.

So you have hundreds of files in a directory and you want to build an index page with links to each one? If you’ve ever built such a page with Dreamweaver, then you know how time consuming this can be.

A simple trick is to open the directory with FireFox – providing browsing is authorized and there is no index/home file. If you’re using relative links, you can also open the local version of the directory on your hard drive.

Copy the content from the page and paste to an empty Dreamweaver page, you should now have a table based list of links. With a bit of search and replacing, you can turn the table to a list in little time.

We’ve tried this in the Windows Environment with success using Firefox and Dreamweaver 8.

The Mac OS has proven a little harder. Firefox nor Safari provide the proper interface to obtain an HTML copy of the viewed directory. This where Internet Explorer 5.2 for mac comes in handy – this is why keeping old software is always a good idea (given the fact you cannot download it anymore from Microsoft – If you deleted your old copy, try here) !
To open the directory you want to view, start by opening an image or html file in the desired directory. Remove the file name from the URL and you should get a directory listing. View source, copy, and paste in code-view in Dreamweaver : you now have an HTML table with the relative links to all the files in that directory.
